Students Reflect on a Life-Changing Summer in Siena
This past summer, Lakehead University students had the opportunity to immerse themselves through the Italian Language and Culture Program in Siena, Italy. For four weeks, students attended classes, explored the historic city, and embraced life in Tuscany — returning with stories of cultural discovery, academic enrichment, and personal growth.
A Journey Beyond the Classroom
For many participants, including Anthropology and Italian language students, this program was their first solo travel experience — an exciting, sometimes challenging, but ultimately rewarding adventure. Students stayed in local Airbnb accommodations, navigated public transportation, and attended daily classes in the heart of Siena. The program offered a strong connection between Lakehead and the host university in Siena, providing a supportive and guided experience for students.
Culture, Cuisine, and Contrade
Beyond the academic curriculum, students experienced the rich traditions of Siena — from its world-renowned cuisine to its historic neighborhoods, known as contrade. Local festivals and city-wide celebrations gave them a firsthand look at the vibrant community life that defines Siena. Field trips to places like the Abbazia San Galgano and Chiusdino added historical depth to their cultural experience, while weekend travel to Florence, Rome, and the Tuscan countryside gave students a broader taste of Italy.
Students expressed a heartfelt thanks to the Institute of Italian Studies and Lakehead University for making this journey possible. Their reflections are a testament to the power of immersive education and cultural exchange.
